ABOUT BODEN MILLS

About John Boden and Boden Mills

A man wearing safety glasses, a cap, and a T-shirt is using a handheld saw to cut a piece of wood, with sawdust flying around.

In 2023 John Boden founded Boden Mills as a family-owned business dedicated to fine woodworking and craftsmanship. The first Boden Mills shop was in the family garage in Altadena, California.

John began his woodworking journey as a conservationist and sawyer in northeastern New Mexico. It was there that he came to appreciate how a tree’s life journey is told in its figure: rings, knots, voids, and burl.  After returning to Southern California, John worked as a finish carpenter at high-end homes in Brentwood, Beverly Hills, and the Palisades. He furthered his woodworking skills working alongside his father, himself an amateur fine-furniture maker. John blends vintage and modern woodworking techniques and tools, including hand techniques of planes and chisels, along with high-tech CAD tools, CNC fabrication, epoxy pours, and laser precision.

Sadly, the Boden Home in Altadena was lost in the Eaton Fire. The Boden Family is deeply committed to Altadena and is in the process of rebuilding the family home. Boden Mills is also actively involved in efforts to preserve Altadena trees for future use in furniture and homes in the rebuilt Beautiful Altadena.

Boden Mills now operates in Monrovia, CA, offering clients artisan-level custom woodworking for moulding, furniture, doors, windows, and other millwork.
